Past

It's against my policy to speak with the dead

Both Balthier and Fran's pasts remain full of holes. They have shared some secrets with one another, while others remain buried deep within their own hearts. Final Fantasy XII's players are only allowed to brush the surface of their long history--together as partners and in the many years prior. Even then, a little outside reading is required for even the slightest understanding. What we do know lends itself to the story of two runaways in search of self and freedom that find both in the company of one another.

The viera have traditionally lived in the solitude of the Wood, distancing themselves from the hume's self-destructive wars and lust for power. With the wood's guidance, they had everything they needed to live out their exceptionally long lives. However, that's not to say there wasn't a curious handful. Even if leaving the sanctuary of the Wood meant abandoning their people -- and being abandoned in turn -- some still wandered forth, sacrificing their past for the promises of freedom.

Among them was Fran. Despite the warnings of Eruyt Village's head -- her own sister, Jote -- she ventured out into the world in search of purpose, leaving her adoring younger sister, Mjrn, and all she knew behind.

Nearly thirty years after Fran's departure from Eruyt, the far off Archadian House of Bunansa welcomed a son. Ffamran Mid Bunansa, born to Doctor Cidolfus Demen Bunansa and his wife, was nothing short of a prodigy. As quick with his tongue as he was on his feet, he was made a Judge -- keeper of the peace and elite guard of the Archadian imperial family -- by the time he was sixteen.

Sixteen also marked the age at which he ran away. Disgusted with his now-widower father's obsession with mastering nethicite -- an obsession that encouraged his son's appointment as a Judge -- Ffamran forsook his noble ties. He adopted the alias "Balthier" and pursued a profession running from the law rather than strictly enforcing it. For all intents and purposes, he was everything his father wasn't, and he planned to keep it that way.

Exactly how these two vagabonds crossed paths is a secret they alone share. At some point Fran met Balthier and struck up a partnership. They would be co-pilots as they took to the skies, free to travel the world as they pleased.

...untill a search for treasure led them to Dalmasca's royal vault and the company of a young thief named Vaan, effectively flinging them head-first into the heated political strife of the day.
