Revenant Wings

Settling for only half the treasure? What sort of sky pirate are you?

Revenant Wings is the sequel to Final Fantasy XII. We know this because Penelo is wearing less clothes.

A textbook example of the Rikku Ordinance of 2004

tOne year after the events of Final Fantasy XII, Vaan has finally acquired his own airship, making him a bona-fide sky pirate. Much like Balthier before him, Vaan travels the world with his nearly-naked co-pilot in search of riches and adventure. After they lose their own ride to collapsing ruins (in true pirate fashion), they commandeer an ancient airship that's more than what meets the eye.

A search for treasure turns out to be much more than what meets the eye, and those crazy kids from Ivalice again find themselves at the center of a cross-continent power struggle. The legendary land of Lemurés -- cushioned in the clouds above Ivalice -- is open season for power-hungry pirates to pillage while the mysterious Judge of Wings plots her revenge against everyone.

Although Vaan remains pleasantly dumb throughout their high-flying hijinks, Penelo painfully tries to assert herself as den mother while two new party members never shake their "gee whiz!" exterior.

Thank goodness for the sky pirates. The original sky pirates, that is.

Balthier

Seems our performance has brought down the house.

Balthier as he appears in Revanant Wings
Oh, how the miserable have risen. Here I am, a bounty on my head, and Balthier is celebrated from one end of Ivalice to the other. If only I had a proper ship to give chase... Ah, this derelict should do nicely.
-Ba'Gamnan
Legendary sky pirate with an unlikely past. His love for treasure gets him in trouble often as not, and this is how he came to travel with Vaan and the others. The self-proclaimed "leading man," Balthier has chosen to step out of the limelight for a time.

On the surface, Balthier appears to be the same dashing sky pirate that made women across the globe swoon, but the temptations of the auracite may just bring out the worst in him. Of course, Balthier is always one step ahead of his protégé, but that doesn't mean said protégé won't have a meeting with the business end of his gun before the truth comes out.

Fran

Perhaps a more simple explanation would confuse less.

t
The Mist in the auracite is strong. If I am not careful, even I might succumb to it. The viera among these sky pirates do not know the danger in which they place themselves. It is all too easy to lose one's self to these Stones.
-Fran
Balthier's most trusted ally. Fran is a fierce warrior and skilled mechanist. As a viera she is uniquely aware of the Mist that pervades all things. Young in appearance, her people are long lived, obscuring her true age.

Fran remains Balthier's loyal partner in the skies, even when it comes to clashing with Vaan and Penelo on the battle field. This loyalty makes her the prime target of Balthier's many enemies, but she's no less capable of handling her weapons now than she was during the war.

together again

Nobody knows men like Fran does

t

Balthier and Fran once again straddle the line between fun anecdote and pivotal players. They know more than they would have Vaan and the rest of those meddling kids know, and their partnership is inevitably a basis of comparison to the central conflict. They just can't stay out of trouble.

It should go without saying that I did not enjoy this game. At all.
